Sunny Side of the Street

The front of our house has south facing exposure which is lovely yet more sun than our yard can handle. We (meaning my favorite husband) have watered, and over-seeded and fertilized and watered and nurse this little yard only to have it rapidly scorch. So, it's time that we say farewell to our crunchy brown grass and move on to a front garden. Here's hoping that the friendly staff at Vale's Greenhouse can save us. The lady we met with this morning was super helpful (not to mention good with kids....she took W hand in hand to see the fish pond & didn't mind if he rode the little iron cows.) In all the research I've been doing in regards to creating a full sun, drought tolerant garden, the Vale's website has been most helpful. It's easy to navigate and their of service is a good reminder as to why the smaller business can be the better option. Especially compared to the level of customer service that now exists in Calgary. A downfall to these strong economic times we live in. Service has suffered, but in all this....Vale's prevails! We're looking forward to having ornamental grasses like BlueOatGrass, and some blooms from Sedums, Lilacs, and Yarrow grace our front garden. A whole lot of color and a lot less crunch!

R Today

Surprise. Ah! The camera again!

YAWN! Oh so sleepy. Although it looks more like he's yelling.

Love his little hands. Love the dimples across his knuckles.

Friday Night Date Night

State of Shock
Puddle of Mud
Daughtry
Nickelback
Our ears are bleeding.
Drinks & appetizers at the lounge beforehand.
Up past midnight.
Wow! Look at us having an adult night out. A singleton date night kind of night. It was fun & edgy and felt weird all at the same time. Isn't it amazing how we become acclimatized very quickly to the changes and situations in our life?
The concert was great. Better than I expected. All bands were fantastic. A little shock therapy for me as I'm so immersed in the suburban/mother/wife world that the foul language, LOUD music, odd hint of drug smoke, people watching and such was a bit shocking at the beginning of the night. Long gone are the days of rock concerts and dancing at the bar with friends. I am so out of touch....who knew that ripped shirts and teeny tiny white short-shorts were sexy & cool. (But let me add to that this disclaimer...Just because they make teeny tiny white shorts in your size does not mean you should wear them. The same goes for halter tops, tube top style dresses, and even rock concert t shirts. Not that I'm a fashionista, but I do know my limits. Anyway, enough about that.)
Favorite Husband and I had a super fun time. It totally beat staying home to watch HGTV.

Crackalacken

On Saturday night as Favorite Husband, myself and a friend sat around the campfire at Cow Lake, the peacefulness and adult conversation was loudly interrupted by frantic crying. That's our boy wailing! FH left the fireside to rescue W and this is what he found: W still wearing his Grobag, met FH at the door of the trailer with an egg in one hand & a frying pan in the other. His bedclothes & "duck" (mini-blanket that he sleeps with) were covered in egg as was the floor due to the 9 eggs that had been smashed into a pile of slippery goo. FH responded with a firm "W what have you done?!" only to have the wailing increase. So, the two made their way to the fire where W was deposited in a chair beside me so that FH could return to the trailer and the egg disaster. I questioned W in a very sweet, friendly voice with the hopes that he would open up & tell me what happened if I didn't sound angry, "Did you get out of bed (aka playpen)?" "Were you in the fridge?" Staring at me with wide eyes, batting long thick eyelashes, silent...until he finally signed and said, "More eggs".

Hungry? Egg obsessed? Probably both.

During W's fireside vigil, his first experience with a campfire, he would point at the fire and state, "No! No! Hot! Burrrn." Burn....new word of the weekend.

Weight a Minute

Yesterday I finally went to the nutrition doctor that I started seeing last August. My most recent appointment was in October. I was on hiatus due to pregnancy. So, what a lovely surprise to find that I have actually lost 12lbs since then. How does that work? Get pregnant, no activity, eat ALOT and lose 12 lbs??!! (Please note:I do NOT recommend this as a health regime.) And it was equally lovely to have the good doctor advise me to maintain my current weight and not lose weight while Baby R is being strictly breastfed. Relief. Motivation....just to be healthier, that is the key...good health. Good health to you my friends! (.....now let's break out the Whirly Pop....)

Birthday Girl....Surprise!

It's my turn to celebrate a birthday and what a surprise celebration it was!

The morning started off very grouchy as my plans the night before had been foiled (public transit, no parking and stampede mayhem!). Add to this that my favorite husband had not wished me a happy birthday by noon and it was a Grouchy Birthday to say the least!

But now I am eating a HUGE helping of humble pie as I enjoyed a wonderful surprise birthday party yesterday, complete with not one but two cakes, lovely friends and family and presents too! Oh my husband is good...very good! I had NO idea....which was obvious due to my poor morning attitude. So it was a true surprise party and I am ever so grateful to my thoughtful, sneaky husband. Thanks my sweet!

....and now I shall add a heaping helping of crow to my dish of humble pie. (Does that make it a la mode?)

Happy Birthday KnobSister!

Bday camping @ Gull Lake 2006
One of my most favorite and longtime friends is celebrating her birthday today.
Happy Birthday Knobsister!
As girls, there was a specific summer, the summer of our 13th year, in which we celebrated our birthdays together by baking our own cake, inviting friends for a sleepover at the farm and renting as many horror movies as we were able. The Friday the 13th series, Nightmare on Elm Street and Chainsaw Massacre to name a few. My parents weren't home for the most part as my dad was in hospital and my mom was either at work or visiting my father, so we had a blast with no adults about and managed to freak ourselves out due to copious amounts of gore.
She is & will always be my Knobsister. As time passed we progressed from the days of wishing for the life of Anne & Diana as bosom friends, to the teen & early adult years as Knobsisters. This lovely nickname came to be after a summer night spent partying at Stephanson's Lake and consuming a magnum or two of Pastel Peach wine. You know, the classy kind with plastic screw in "corks", we wore these knobson the ends of our index finger, hence the name, "Knobsister". I even have a picture of us from this night...too bad it's not on the computer, I'ld love to share it.
Last year we managed to celebrate together at Gull Lake and this year brings us to the Reba McEntire concert.
Anyway, that's a little of our story...so, Happy Birthday friend. May it be the start of a wonderful year!

23 Months...Countdown to 2yrs.

What a little boy our W has become. The baby days are long gone and it's full scale toddlerhood. The past 23 months of learning has brought W these abilities:
- signing & chatting, he's now starting to "sing" (hum) with me when I sing his bedtime songs.
- dancing! Oh the dance moves! Leaping like a lemur and spinning in circles. He also has figure skating moves in which he stands on one leg and lifts the other outwards behind him and as high as he can with the knee bent. It's pretty cute.
- "Go!" His love of hockey (Go!) continues. Unfortunately he'll be spending alot of time in the penalty box for highsticking.
- Fake crying....lol...not sure where this came from, but he squints his eyes and kinda whines if you say cry.
- Animal sounds, vehicle sounds, etc.
- Loves construction sites. It's great for driving around the city as he loves going through these zones and will ask for "more" once you've passed through. Some tastes are just engrained into genders, aren't they?
- The great outdoors and all things related are of great interest to W. He would stay outside 24hrs if possible. This includes getting very dirty. Super fun!
- And my all time favorite....if you ask W to "sleep like Dad", he'll lay down and pretend to snore. heee...hee...lol...I wonder who taught him this?!
W is a loving, active, on the go little boy who at the end of the day likes nothing more than a story, a song and a snuggle. Who can resist that?

Midweek

Our week thus far....

Sunday: A short visit with dear friends who are the proud parents of triplets. I was so impressed by how quiet the household was (until we arrived of course!) and how organized they are. The babies are so precious and growing quickly; already 9lbs, 10lbs, 11lbs+/-. It was fun to finally meet them and we look forward to playdates in the future. ~ Did I take any pictures to document this occasion? No. Too busy cuddling babies and helping B rescue W from temptation.

Monday: Muffin Monday - as the picture notes W was busy helping me with the muffins. Unfortunately he loved stirring so much that it continued once the muffins were baked. He also ate not one but THREE muffins yesterday. Yikes! Try the recipe....they're the best muffins I've ever had. A friend gave me the recipe (it's from the Looneyspoons Cookbook)

Bananaberry Bombs
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking pwd
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups mashed bananas (make sure they're ripe...I use 3-4 bananas)
2 egg whites
1/4 cup reduced fat butter or marg melted (not fat free)
1 cup fresh/frozen blueberries
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Stir well, set aside.
In a small bowl, whisk together bananas, egg whites, melted butter until smooth. Add banana mix to dry ingredients & mix until just moistened. Gently fold in blueberries.
Spray large muffin tin with non-stick spray or use paper muffin cups (I do both). Divide batter evenly between 12 muffin cups. Bake for 20 min or until done.

Tuesday: Visit with Mrs. V & her little one....sadly, we've found out they'll be moving to Prince Edward Island...taking advantage of the Alberta Boom. Cashing in and moving to greener, less hectic pastures. Wonderful for them, but we'll miss them! ~ W demonstrated his love for the fruit bowl by emptying all the apples, peaches and plums onto the floor in a nice little pyramid between the deck door and chair legs. His infatuation for fruit was later expressed at dinner time when I had to lay him down on the couch, look up his left nostril with a flashlight and extract a large piece of watermelon rind using tweezers from his nose. This is the event that was about to take place just as favorite husband arrived home from work. Welcome home!

Wednesday: Discovered the McD's play place. At 9am no one else was there until another tall, busy, 2 yr old boy arrived who W immediately warmed up to and they played like old friends. Until.....Until Master New Friend noticed baby R and kissed him repeatedly on the head. W was not impressed! Back away from my "bup"! This little fella was very similiar to W in development & size, and his mom was super friendly. It was refreshing to meet both of them.

And through it all R is the most content baby. He was introduced to the swing this week, and it quickly lulls him to sleep which is a godsend while I am going through W's nap routine. Saves alot of tears & anxiety.~ R quietly tolerates all the kisses that are bestowed repeatedly upon his head by his brother (and now 2yr old boys at the McDs playplace.)

Emotional Eating

This is a subject that's an active part of my life right now. Obviously, it's a pattern with me or I wouldn't be the size that I am, that and the fact that exercise escapes me.
Okay, so I have recognized that I eat copious amounts of food when I am stressed, which right now is daily, so what do I do about it? How do I control this demon? While I am inhaling the box of macaroni or the complete medium ham & pineapple pizza, my mind is racing with thoughts of how bad this is for me, yet I don't stop. I barely even slow down. Preparing for meals appears to be the worst time for me, the demon is out in full force. I find myself eating throughout the whole prep time and then have the meal as well.
My FH & I have discussed on several occasions that we want raise healthy children who are not ruled by food and are of normal weight. Now, isn't leading by example the most important aspect in teaching children? This over eating challenge needs to be conquered if only for this reason alone.
But there are so many other reasons too....good health (live long and prosper), the "vain" reasons....looking good in shorts, not being afraid & embarassed to "take my legs out", waving to people without the skin from my arms shaking, running down the stairs without hearing applause only to realize there is no one behind me, having energy, shopping in regular stores (no more specialty stores), etc. etc.
Okay, so the reasons why are evident, now why not? That's a whole other issue. One I need to delve into further. For now, I leave with the quest for how to tackle the challenge of NOT stress eating on a day to day, meal to meal basis.

Nap time

We need to enroll this child in gymnastics! After the headstands, he rubs his head and proclaims, "Ow!"

Notice the truck. It was NOT put to bed initially. How did it get there?

Nap time is usually an uneventful, easy 2-3 hrs in which W goes to sleep without a complaint or hitch. Today is a different story. While I write this I can still hear the odd thump and squeal as W attempts to settle down. I've returned to his room twice now. The second time, the above demonstrates what I found.

R is 6 weeks!

As usual time is passing by quite quickly. Our baby is now 6 weeks of age and growing, growing, growing:
17.5 lbs
24.5 in tall

Smiles can be coerced if you make eye contact & talk in a high sing-song voice. The cooing is beginning and it's incredibly sweet.

As I write this he is sleeping in the sling and once in a while sucking his thumb, which I find sweet as well. Self soothing is a wonderful talent!

So much for our little 8lb 13oz babe...apparently being strictly breastfed is a the key to fast growth or is this due to the milk being actual whip cream? Definately a homogenized version.

Canada Day

140 yrs old. Still a teenager really. I wasn't the most festive Canadian this weekend...there was no flag cake or matching red tshirts. Friday we attended Stage West, which was a fantastic production. So fun! Canadian music from the 50's until now. There was much laughing, chair dancing, a little singing along and wishing choir was like a StageWest production.
Saturday morning found us packing the trailer and heading "westward ho" for a weekend of camping. Our first family of four camp out. We've all returned in one piece. No one fell in the river, and the children were not carried off for a feast by the abundant & mutant mosquitos. Therefore we will definately attempt this again. On our way home, my favorite husband asked what I would do differently next time we go camping.....nothing, the baby was a breeze & the toddler did really well all things considered... I guess just ensure we have booked into a family oriented location.
Camping Quote of the Weekend: "B......W is playing with the woodhammer". (aka Axe....from our 4 yr old friend "Rock Star")
