A Week in Review

It's hard to believe that I haven't blogged all week. How negligent! Anyway, I'll try to recap the highlights without going overboard. So, here it goes.....

Uncle B! - he's our savior. Stayed with W while R & I went to a Dr's appt. W loves, loves, LOVES his Uncle B. They rough-house and laugh and play some more. It's a real treat to have Uncle B for a couple of hours. Thanks again!

W's 2yr checkup - all is well. 36.5 lbs & 95cm tall. Other than dashing away from the weighstation into another examining room, all went well.

R's 3mth checkup - 19lbs - off the charts! All is well here too, almost all the little quirks found at birth have corrected themselves. *Sigh* What a relief.

Such a strong little man. Loves to look over your shoulder to see what's going on, blows raspberries, and smiles & coos whenever you speak to him.

Camping @ Paddy's Flats - not our best camping trip due to the weather & such. W was sleep deprived all weekend, which makes for a temperamental two yr old. All things considered he did well. The four of us went on a hike this morning & he RAN the whole way....only some steep hills slowed him down...and there was a tumble or two into the brush, but he would get up, announce, "Fall down!" and keep on going. Of course, R slept the whole hike in the sling. Such a good boy!

We've really noticed how W's speech is progressing. His vocabulary now includes, "Come On" ( in an southern kindof way), "Lucy", he answers "good" when you ask how are you, and has started mimicking physical activity. A friend was sitting in a chair with her legs crossed, he sat down in the chair closest to her & deliberately crossed his legs as well. It's quite cute and probably one of those "you have to be there" moments. He also loves his buddies and would take his friend by the hand, just for a walk, this weekend. To see the 5yr old and 2yr old walking hand in hand is so sweet.

And now it's Sunday night. Time to pack for a trip to Granny's house. Wish us luck!

Epiphany

I had one today. An epiphany. It hurt too. This whole business of life and growth is really over rated at times. So now that I've had it, what do I do with it. Today it became glaringly obvious that I have this need to always be right. Why? What does this gain me? Does it really matter who put the camera box in the closet? Is it really necessary to snap at my husband and accuse him of arguing with me about the Columnar Aspen Tree's pot? Ugh! To compound this realization about myself, there's one more thing. Another two men in my life have a tendancy to knock heads with me (or vice versa). This can be very stressful and challenging. To make it worse, today I realized that the reason they bug me so much is that I am JUST LIKE THEM!! They too have a need to be right and then not let things go. Great. So again, now what? This is an opportunity for me to "grow" and become a better person....or just continue on and drive myself and those closest to me nutty. Grow, grow, grow...growth sucks sometimes. Now, how do I do it? In what direction?
I think I need some fertilizer.

Picture This....

It's storytime for 2yr-3yr olds at the library. The program room is full of toddlers and their mothers. The librarian at the front of the room beside her easel is reading a book about farm animals as it's the Farmyard Friends series today and all the children are sitting nicely on the floor or in their mom's lap....all except one, my one! W is escaping from me for the umpteenth time....he crawls through my legs, under my chair, runs between the row of chairs and the wall until he gets to the waist high shelf display of books, knocks a few over, then goes to the front of the room behind the librarian, steps over the cord to her ghetto blaster so that he can access it better, while he is playing with her CD player I hastily finish setting R unbuckled into his car seat and stride to the front while trying not to step on anyone or get in the way, to capture W. He does complain and I whisper vehemently into his ear that we are leaving now. While holding a squirming 2yr old on my knee I manage to buckle the babe in his seat, carry both of them to the door (all the while there is still storytelling going on) and struggle to open the door without dropping either child or my purse because apparently I looked really in control and no other person within arms reach (there must have been 5 adults within reach) was able to open the door for us. Aarrggh! Did I mention that the baby WAILED as soon as we sat down in the program room and W managed to kick the boy in front of us twice ( of course he kindly said "Hi, hi!" when the boy turned around to see who was kicking him). All this and more in 15 minutes.
That little tricker! Last week he was prefectly behaved at storytime. We will not be returning to storytime. Illiteracy is in our future. So is a harness and a straight-jacket. Everyone looks great in white.

5 boys, a girl and cake.

Loud little boy mayhem hit the house today as there were 6 children 2yrs of age and under here for a playdate. It was superfun, despite the odd squabble over learning to share ("GIVEIT!") and the one child who tries to wrestle with his friends (we won't name names, but he just had a bday this week) and the friends do not want to wrestle. The babies were perfectly behaved and even managed to catch a nap with their brothers about.

As fun as it is to watch the boys play....ahemm, I mean referee....it was even more enjoyable to chat with & listen to the other mom's; to learn that in one way or another the three of us are living the same nutty experiences. There is strength in numbers.

The highlight of the morning was definately snack time. Cake! Let them eat cake. We dined on lovely little cupcake cones. The boys were incrediblely patient and well behaved during their morning break. All sat quietly and patiently at the table, trussed up with their "serviettes" tucked around their necks. Then happily plowing through their cones.....or just eating the frosting and then it's off to make the most of their sugar rush.
Definately a do-again!
Cupcake Cones
I used the quick method for these and they were very tasty. For the cupcakes I used a super moist milk chocolate cake mix, followed the directions on the box and cooked them in the flat bottom cones. Topping: Pudding Frosting - mix one package of vanilla instant pudding, a package of "dream whip", 1/2 tsp of vanilla and 1/3 cup of milk. Beat on high for about 5 minutes, until peaks are forming. I then transferred it to a zip lock bag, cut the corner off and used it as a pastry bag to decorate the cones. A dash of sprinkles and voila! you're done! Super easy & an absolute hit with the kids...young & old alike.

Happy 2nd Birthday W!

Brand-new W...just minutes old.

1st Bday.

Two years ago today our first born blessed our lives. The memory of driving home from the hospital with our new babe and the days that followed are still so clear. It's amazing that our baby is now two! A talking, huggable, kissable, laughing, running, climbing, leaping like a lemur, loud, independent two years old. Every day he amazes me. Just today he came out with new words; sky, oven. Now he'll sing with me a little during his sleep routine. If I pay attention and don't let day to day life take over, it's easy to see his growth and changes daily. What a lovely little boy we have. I am so proud of him. Proud he is our son. Proud I am his mom.

Rainy Day Play

The last few days have been cool and wet (which is a lovely repreive, I must admit) therefore we've had to be a little creative when it came to keeping W entertained. You know, rather than letting him entertain himself by wearing a cooking pot as a hat, cracking eggs on the floor in front of the fridge, etc. So, this is what I came up with:

  • "Ready, Set, Go!" - placing his crib mattress on the floor in front of the couch so that he can jump off the couch safely rather than jumping on the couch
  • "Island Time" - sitting at the island to color, put wooden puzzles together (9 is W's favorite number) and play with play dough using cookie cutters.

We made our own play dough. It's pretty easy:

Play Dough

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1 cup water

2 tsp cream of tartar or alum

1-1/4 tbsp oil

food coloring

Mix food coloring in water and combine with remaining ingredients in a saucepan place on medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture forms a ball. Remove from saucepan and knead until pliable. Store at room temperature in a covered container. Keeps approximately 3 months if kept in a sealed container.

Birthday Madness

Our W is turning 2yrs tomorrow. Two years old! Wow. It's amazing that our first babe is now a full fledged toddler.
And I'm so excited about his birthday. Excited to have a fun filled, low key birthday that we will all enjoy. No birthday bash for us with overwhelmed, over-sugared, over-spent, over-stressed people. This will be a quiet immediate family event in which the morning is whiled away at Heritage Park. W will love it there! Trains ("toot toot! bumps!" says W anytime we see a train or train track when we are out driving around the city), room to run, and animals to see (He'll be able to practice all his animal sounds as hear them live!) What more can a two yr old ask for? Then after dinner there's the cake and gifts. A hockey stick cake no less. W still loves "GO!", so the cake will be a hit. On Tuesday we're having a few little buddies over for a playdate-with-cake, but it isn't a birthday party. Just a morning of unorganized play with three friends and cake. B & I decided against the traditional party as it's too overwhelming for all of us, especially W. He does NOT like it when people sing "Happy Birthday". I think it scares him. Plus it's just too easy to get carried away with the celebration. Really, children's birthday parties have now become like weddings. The cake, the menu, the guest list, the favors....all that's missing is the dress. Did you know there is a website to assist with diminishing the stress of birthday parties? Parents are doing their best to give their children the birthday they will always treasure and maybe the birthday they never received as a child. Whatever happened to home parties? You know....cake, jello, ice cream, weiner roasts (that was the social event of the summer during my childhood), etc. Now it's rented ponies, "live" pirates, rented tiger cubs and even limos (for a 3yr old)! Hopefully, as time marches on our boys won't feel like the neighborhood geeks because their parents provided small scale celebrations. We're just as proud and excited to celebrate their birthdays, just not in the market for the hollywood style soires. All I can really say is....let them eat cake!

Almost 3 Months

On Thursday our littlest man had his first appointment with the Public Health Nurse. What a trooper! Those three injections are so mean and he sobbed the most painful cry yet after a minute or two of snuggles and songs (Hi-Lili Hi-Lo)he fell asleep in my arms, even before nurse Melanie had completed the paperwork. Such a good boy! His growth has slowed a little since his 6 week appointment, but he is still completely off the charts for his age. I'm very proud of R. He's done incredibly well in a short period of time.

Twinkle Toes

Twinkle, twinkle little toes...
I love to twinkle! It's been ages since I've enjoyed the artistic talents of the Twinkle Toes Lady. She's amazing. Freehands these cute little designs on every toe. If you ever get the chance to experience her talents, go for it. Makes your feet happy.
Ours (my neice & I) are pretty sad even with the twinkling. Pedicures are needed and somehow I am clutzy lately therefore rammed my foot into goodness knows what this evening and broke my nail. Ouch! Ah well, the other nine are still pretty.

Happy Birthday Brother

[Uncle J & baby R. So sweet.]
40 yrs. Wuhoo! Did you know that 40 is the new 30? Unfortunately, my brother doesn't think so. J feels more than half his life is over because "there's no way I'm making it to 80yrs". What a guy.

We suprised him with a group campout at Haunted Lake, which was super fun...except maybe at the revealing of the cake....for J anyway. J didn't want any cake or gifts or singing or anything, but we did and he seemed to not like it although inside somewhere I'm sure he did. He had to be convinced to stay for cake and that purchasing ice could really wait until later. Despite the protests I think he was really touched that we all went to the trouble for a birthday weekend in his honor. I love my brother. He's a great guy. Funny. Kind & generous. He's been known to give off this tough guy persona, but really is just a big marshmallow fella.
Happy Birthday Big Brother!
These two were attached at the hip all weekend. Cousin asked if he could hold W, while they sat by the fire.

Aim Required

Check this out. As a mother of two boys, this caught my eye and cracks me up. It's available at CaterTot Consignment in Airdrie...if you're in the market for one. I shouldn't laugh too loud in case that one eventually finds it's way into my home (which I can't imagine at this point and time, but you never know....). So it's portable. Does this mean I can pack it up and take it along to friends homes or on vacation? How stable is it? I have a son who would probably want to stand in it or use it as a ladder to reach some off limits item. Are the scented "pucks" required like those found in adult urinals?
Have you seen the cute little people's toilets in some shopping centres, such as Market Mall. They have the best family washrooms in all the land! Even little seats with a harness so that your little one is contained while you do your business or "visit my aunt" (as my mother called it during my childhood years).
These are the topics that are of interest when one becomes a mom. Scary isn't it?

Shrek the Third

Have I told you how much W loves Shrek? Well, he certainly is smitten. Apparently while I was in hospital having R, W discovered Shrek thanks to the TV commercials. Uncle B witnessed him kissing and hugging the TV and felt sorry for the little guy so generously bought him the DVD set. It's been two and a half months of W watching Shrek, especially Shrek 2. Why not indulge his interests further? Today, W, R and I went to the theatre to partake in Shrek the Third. We went to a movie! And W was perfectly behaved! Thank goodness for wheelchair accessible theatres because I took the double stroller. W sat in the front seat with his little tray of popcorn and glass of juice, while I stood beside him and rocked R in the sling. (The moment we walked into the theatre R started to wail [the movie was too loud for him I think] so he was switched to the sling) This system worked wonders and once R was sound asleep I was able to sit beside W. He loved the movie....a regular Siskel & Eibert he is. Commenting on interesting events..."Meow" (puss in boots), "Gruk" (Shrek), "Oh no!", etc. Never fidgeted or tried to escape the confines of the stroller. Although he did scream rather loudly at a scene that was frightening, but a little hand holding with Momma and the scream ended abruptly, even before people revolted or tried to have us removed. I'm quite proud of my little fella. What a big day for Mr. Almost-Two. And who can beat $3 for an afternoon of entertainment?

It's the Little Things

Today I take great pride in my oldest son. W showed such good behavior and listening skills this morning while at the chiropractor! He stayed in the treatment room and did not attempt the great escape. This isn't to say that it wasn't considered as he did reach for the door handle while looking back at me, yet when I reminded him that it was a "no-!", he backed off. Yay! He played nicely with the toys and stayed at the play area. W was super friendly to Dr. Patty and so happy to see her. Saying hi and chatting about secrets only he and Dr. Patty are privy too. He also lay on the table like an adult for his adjustment and giggled profusely. When Dr. Patty was finished with him, he climbed back up onto the table to lay down and request, "More, more." (So cute.)

Ahhhh*sigh* A potentially stressful and hectic visit was perfect. I am so pleased. Apparently, talking to W about what will happen, what the expectations and repercussions are works. Well, it worked today. Hot damn & hallelujah!

It's the Little Things

Today I take great pride in my oldest son. W showed such good behavior and listening skills this morning while at the chiropractor! He stayed in the treatment room and did not attempt the great escape.
