Picture This....

It's storytime for 2yr-3yr olds at the library. The program room is full of toddlers and their mothers. The librarian at the front of the room beside her easel is reading a book about farm animals as it's the Farmyard Friends series today and all the children are sitting nicely on the floor or in their mom's lap....all except one, my one! W is escaping from me for the umpteenth time....he crawls through my legs, under my chair, runs between the row of chairs and the wall until he gets to the waist high shelf display of books, knocks a few over, then goes to the front of the room behind the librarian, steps over the cord to her ghetto blaster so that he can access it better, while he is playing with her CD player I hastily finish setting R unbuckled into his car seat and stride to the front while trying not to step on anyone or get in the way, to capture W. He does complain and I whisper vehemently into his ear that we are leaving now. While holding a squirming 2yr old on my knee I manage to buckle the babe in his seat, carry both of them to the door (all the while there is still storytelling going on) and struggle to open the door without dropping either child or my purse because apparently I looked really in control and no other person within arms reach (there must have been 5 adults within reach) was able to open the door for us. Aarrggh! Did I mention that the baby WAILED as soon as we sat down in the program room and W managed to kick the boy in front of us twice ( of course he kindly said "Hi, hi!" when the boy turned around to see who was kicking him). All this and more in 15 minutes.
That little tricker! Last week he was prefectly behaved at storytime. We will not be returning to storytime. Illiteracy is in our future. So is a harness and a straight-jacket. Everyone looks great in white.

  1. yeah, we don't go the library anymore either...and I think Mrs. Sweetpeas has also had 'issues' with storytime. Welcome to the club!
