Great Big Thanks!

Many, many heartfelt and overdue thanks to Mrs. Sweetpeas for the cute itty, bitty hat. It was a delight to receive this handknit chapeau in the mail from a fellow knitter, mother and friend. Knit on Sista!

Thanks again.

Brothers

W & R are becoming more interactive with each other. It's too sweet to witness R smile at W when he's talking to him. Lately, W crouches down to R's eyelevel and says in the sweetest sing-song voice, "Hi BayBee, Hi BayBee".

Puberty

...as discussed between my brother and his 8yr old son.

It all started when A told his dad that he thinks the dog is hitting purberty because she snapped at his sister.

And then the conversation continued a few days later...

A: I am getting a unibrow and moustache.
(Remember he's 8yrs old.)
D: Really.
A: Yup. That means I'm starting puberty soon.
D: What's puberty?
A: It's the next stage of humanization.

4 Months

Our babe is growing and changing all the time. He now weighs in at 20 lb 4oz. He's so content and happy that it's almost worthy of having another baby. (Almost but not quite!)
All in all, Little R is a delight. When he's not sleeping or eating, he loves to be talked to and talk back, to smile, and is starting to giggle (it's a half-giggle really...), loves to snuggle with a blanket or stuffy and of course, they go straight into his mouth.
Saturday night he attended his first adult party and was so well-behaved. R slept most of the evening in my arms. Which is how he spends most of his outings, but that's okay. We enjoy his easy disposition and ability to sleep almost anywhere. Besides, I have a theory that these content babies are just storing their energy for when they become toddlers and will then release all this pent up energy full force.
We love our little "Bup" (this is the pet name his older brother has assigned him) and can't imagine life without him.

Got Milk?

Due to problems digesting the proteins in regular dairy milk & the onset of excema, W has been "on" goats milk for some time now. We've been contemplating switching him back to cow's milk to see if he has outgrown this sensitivity as we've been told & read that children often outgrow certain allergies. I really am fine with the goat's milk other than it's can be expensive ($3.19 per litre) and hard to find. All the regular stores carry it but it goes out of stock quite quickly.

ANYWAY.... how does international creamer fit into the milk market for our boy?

This morning I am sitting on the loveseat in "Man's World" nursing baby R, when I see W dash towards the front door...obviously with some contraband item in his hand as this is his "hiding" spot when he's up to something. (I say "hiding" because there are no walls to hide him there, it's just an open entry but he seems to find it rather discreet. ) Poor R gets unlatched and placed on the loveseat while I investigate only to find this! W smells of french vanilla and the evidence cannot be denied as the fridge door was still open and when he returned to the fridge W of course had to stoop down to taste the goods....again.

Now, does the fancy creamer count as "dairy"? We're not giving up goat's milk for international creamer!

25 Months

W never ceases to amaze us these days. Whether it's his funny sense of humour....he pretends to burp "uuuuggg!" then laughs loudly and declares, "Burp!"......his kind, loving heart....giving fierce hugs & sweet kisses....his ability to pick up new words daily, or how he can become easily frustrated, temperamental, throw toys and wrestle his friends to the ground (much to my chagrin & horror)....he's a lovely little boy that has my heart wrapped around his little finger. Somedays I cannot believe he's already 2yrs old. It really does seem like yesterday that we were just bringing him home and watching him sleep, dreaming about what he would be like in the future. Now, I find myself watching him and wishing time would just slow down a little and hoping I'll remember these moments forever.

Wonderful Windsday

It's Windsday...a blustery, rainy, windsday. But a great one at that!
This morning the Littles and I registered for the fall session of Heritage Time Out. W was so happy to return. He knew where his room was and went straight in with no hesitation....happy to see me go & happy to see me return. What more can a mom ask for?! So, it's back to knitting. My first project is a scarf made from the silk of recycled saris.
AND....we had a happy successful grocery shopping expedition this morning too! Baby Little slept the whole time and Toddler Little was a happy little race car driver while consuming a whole cheese bun. The sweetest little guy walked our groceries to the truck for us. He chatted with W who chatted happily back...until the fellow touched W on the arm, who then said "OW!"& held his hand up to me for a kiss. The carryout cutie didn't hurt him at all really....W just wasn't up for being touched by a stranger, regardless of how nice he was. Anyway.....Wuhoo for Windsday! (It really is the small things in life that make a gal happy isn't it?)

3D View

Aren't they super-cool?! As the story goes, our favorite Uncle B supplied W with his own Shrek DVDs. Within the one DVD case is a supply of 3D glasses. For a reason only known to W, the glasses were a hit today. He wore them off & on throughout the day. It was too cute to see him puttering about the house, going about his day, wearing these fancy specs.

Wish you were here to witness it in person Uncle B, but we did manage to capture a pic for you.

Soap Box Rant - Customer Service

The Alberta Advantage.
Booming economy.
Blah! Blah! Blah!
We all know this so-called economic boom brings a multitude of challenge to our city as well as the province. Housing shortage and elevated costs, a shortage of staff, infrastructure challenges, etc, etc. One area that I have noticed which is drastically affected is service. Customer service in any industry. This frustrates me to no end. My favorite husband and I have had many conversations about the lack of quality or friendly service and that we need to simply change our expectations to having no expectation. Expect nothing and we will not be let down. Well, it's gone too far and has to come to an end eventually. Doesn't it??? Recently I was frustrated by a company in SK that makes blown glass items because they didn't send my order for over a month after the order was placed. However, they made it up to me by sending an apology gift. Very nice. Recognized their error and apologized. All is well.
Then, in August we signed a contract to have the exterior of our home painted by College Pro Painters. This contract has not been upheld. Numerous phone messages left and two "no-shows" has led me to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. How will any company find the will to change if concrete action isn't taken? Just ignoring the problem will not make it go away. (However much we love the Ostrich Method of conflict resolution...it's not that effective.) So, here's hoping that something positive comes of this.
On a happier note, I was in Staples and Home Depot within the past two days and received such friendly, happy service. I'm going to write them a letter too! Gotta share the love!

Virgo Mania

Happy Birthday dear Virgos!
Two of my favorite people are celebrating birthday's this month.
Happy Happy to Mrs. Mittens!
Happiest of days to my favorite husband!
May all your birthday dreams come true.

As tradition requires a scrumpt-deli beet cake with brown sugar icing(Company's Coming recipe from the Cake book...by the way, did you know Jean Pare and I are share the same home town? What a claim to fame!) was made for my favorite husband. This year, W assisted in the creating which included munching on carrots and beats (uck!) as I grated them and assisting me to crack an egg into the batter. Good thing I was able to retrieve the shells! Well, despite my assistant's lack of experience, the cake was tasty and my birthday husband was pleased by the treat.

Diva's Soiree

Ms. Divine herself hosted a fabulous Diva Night including a Diva Divine signature drink, scores of tasty appetizers & beverages, a silent auction of items each diva brought to share, a numerologist, and much laughter. A fun night! Here's to the Diva in all of us!

And what I really appreciated about the evening? Well, driving the corvette while wearing a feather boa and heels no doubt!

The Zoo Crew

A chilly morning spent at the Zoo. It was so good to get out of the house. Despite the pending rain we braved the weather and were succesful. The clouds didn't open up until we were in the truck and ready to leave.
W was thrilled about going to the Zoo. On route he demonstrated animal sounds of all the ones he wanted to see, including a lovely loud, loud, loud shriek for a peacock. He loves seeing the animals, but the info-phones are a real hit too. We can barely pass one by without stopping to listen/talk.
And R....sweet little R just slept the whole time we were there, must have been the coziness of a winter hat, sweater and blanket...for a while only one eye was peaking out.
Pushing the double stroller has got to count as some sort of work out. I figure that with the boys alone it weighs 56lbs. Plus there is a hill or two at the Zoo. I must have worked off breakfast at the very least!
Ah, a lovely morning had by all.

Giving

Pay It Forward is one of my favorite movies. Yes, it's a bit sad at times, but the overall message is one that I and society need to live on daily basis. Am I successsful in this? Not as frequently as I would like to be. I get caught up in my own life and forget or neglect to think & act about/towards others. This stumps me. As one wee individual in this big, big world, how can I affect others in a positive way? How can I give on an on-going basis?
Philanthropist. I would love to live my life as a philanthropist and I don't believe you need a lot of money to do so. It would be nice, but it's not required. So why am I not doing it? Oh, I need a kick in the butt. I once had a boss who was a philanthropist of sorts. He gave to his employees and others with no fan fare and a lot of secrecy. He was generous to the core and truly enjoyed seeing people thrive and enjoy. Never before have I worked for such an inspiring individual.
Giving. Have you read Bill Clinton's latest book? I would like to, despite the fact that it's written by a former dishonest politician. The message sounds interesting.
Heifer International. This is an organization that I heard of years ago and think is brilliant. Even a few bees can be life changing.
Kiva. New to me, and brilliant. It's all about a hand-up not a hand-out, right?
Today I decided to donate our baby clothes and items to the Louise Dean Centre. Teenage moms can certainly use all the help there is to offer.
What else? Where else? Who else? How else? I feel the need to give on a more regular basis. Do you give? In what way? Time? Donations? Any ideas would be much appreciated. I've even been tossing around the idea of starting a Mom's Sense (cents) drive to collect and donate pennies to an organization or group in need. Something easy that we all have lots of and probably wouldn't miss. Let's face it, pennies just pile up & rarely get used...at my house anyway. (This type of initiative was orchestrated at my previous place of employment to benefit the Alzheimer Society and it was well received.)What do you think of this idea?
So go ahead, give me your thoughts please.

Shake-n-Bake in the Badlands

Our last camping trip of the summer was spent in the Drumheller Valley with fun friends. Despite a morning of rain and a day of shirking sleep routines we had a good weekend.

We learned this trip that camping where trees exist is such a pleasure, fireworks while camping are the "in" thing this summer, kids love, love, love the large cheesy dinosaur statues throughout the town, that some RV parks are the epitome of an adult bush party and it takes an RV park to raise a child. Thank goodness for friends who too have small children and were willing to help and laugh when it came to our child escaping, kissing the dog and their daughters, touching the woodhammer, and just general toddler antics.

Farewell to camping for another season. We look forward to next year when our children are older and we're more seasoned parents.
PS: Many thanks to the Cornbergs for the racy attire the boys are wearing.

Hawaii in a Hurry

Tuesday nights tend to be hectic in our household as I have choir practice and last night was no exception. The standard question of the night is, what to make my favorite husband for dinner that doesn't take heaps of time, he'll enjoy and will allow me to get out the door on time? Aha! Hawaii-in-a-Hurry! My first recipe creation. B loved it! He's even happy to have the left-overs for dinner tonight.
Hawaii-in-a-Hurry
1 ham steak (this is the store bought, large, thin variety)
1 can coconut milk
1 1/2 cups instant rice (for the record, I really dislike instant rice, but again...in a hurry!)
1 cup pineapple chunks.
Cut the ham steak into large chunks so that it will fit into the bottom of the casserole dish. Layer ingredients in a casserole dish in the above order. Bake covered @ 400 degrees for 25 minutes.
