This long weekend, in addition to some fun, is the "taking our house back" weekend.
Re organizing.
Purging.
Labelling.
Re organizing, etc, etc.
Oh, how wonderful when all is in it's place. For all of 10 min, my sister would say, but hey! An effort is always worthwhile.
The entrance closet is in alignment...there are baskets labelled with each family member's name, the shoes are in hanging organizers, the coats on hangers, the floor can be seen and it smells like vanilla. Mmmm...it's like cookies greet you when the door is opened.
The boys' dressers have the drawers labelled as to the contents, everything is nicely folded, the diapers are in drawers too...wuhoo!!
Our closet has been redone...the polka dot boxes are labelled too.
Now it's on to the office. Whew!
Now you know the truth about us...we're geeks. Madly organizing, label maker influenced geeks.

Happy Long Weekend!
It's summer!
There is a neighbor that showed up at 5pm with a bottle of chilled homemade kiwi wine. It was fabulous! I do think this should become a Friday summer ritual! Hopefully, this impromptu wine tasting event didn't shock my neice and cause her to never want to babysit again as she was there to care for our boys while we attended a Stagewest production, which was fabulous 70's fever, by the way. I got the boogie woogie fever....especially with a groovy pair of platform heels. Okay...totally rambling....
Isn't this an important aspect of summer? Sitting out in the evening sun, enjoying conversation and friends and cool drinks...drinks of any sort, even ice water is sufficient when shared with a friend on a warm summer's evening.
Sounds like a little slice of heaven to me, hope you find your slice tonight!
Happy long weekend to you.

One Fell Off & Bumped His Head
One little monkey jumping on the bed, he fell off and bumped his head.
Momma called the doctor and the doctor said...
"Bring him in for stitches"
A clipped blood vessel, two stitches, a lot of blood, crying and yelling, two tongue depressors and a pocket full of ottoscope attachments later and we're home from the clinic. Hopefully, my little W monkey will not attempt jumping on his bed during nap time again.
Does a mother's heart ache for her child as equally strong every time they get hurt? Part of me hopes so, I think it would be sad to become indifferent. I felt so bad for our little man as he was stitched up this afternoon. As the parent we're supposed to protect them and he's just too little to understand that I was doing just that as I let the nurse and doctor complete their tasks. Afterwards as we left the drugstore next door where W was allowed to pick out a "blue juice & chocolate bar", while walking hand in hand with me, he said, "Mommy, I was sad at the Doctors."
"I know you were W...."
"I cried and cried and cried."
"I know. You were very brave."
"Yeah and I got blue juice and a sucker-ball and a chocolate bar."
Ah, all is well in the world when there are treats to be had.

Toddler's Picnic
The Toddler's Picnic...if you go in the backyard today you're sure of a big surprise, If you go into the backyard today, you better go in disguise.
Menu...Nemo Snacks, 1/2 peanut butter sandwich, 1/2 blueberry breakfast bar, two pieces of watermelon and a sippy cup of juice each. A toddler's dream menu.
"Watch them, catch them unawares as they picnic on their holidays"...Both guests were quite happy until the hungry little boy stole the equally hungry little girl's nemo snacks. There was some protesting. Some loud yelling. And some quckly stuffing all of said snacks into one's mouth.
Today's the day the Toddler's have their picnic.

Summer Salads
Mmmmm....summer is a wonderful time for delcious salads. Salads of all sorts. Green leafy salads, potato, pasta and the pretend salads...desert "salads" made with whipped cream, pineapple, banana and shaved chocolate. So tasty but definately the term salad is used loosely.
Yesterday we had a Broccoli Pasta Salad served with our BBQ'd burgers during an evening dinner on the deck. The burgers had shredded cheese mixed into the raw patties along with worchestershire sauce. Below is the salad recipe:
Broccoli Pasta Salad
3/4 box of whole wheat rotini pasta, cooked
2 crowns of broccoli finely chopped
4 pieces of cooked bacon coarsely chopped
3 green onions chopped
large handful of raisins
1/2 cup of frozen grapes coarsely chopped
1 cup mayo
1 TBsp lemon juice
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup chopped pecans
Mix it all together in a largish bowl, refrigerate until cool. Enjoy.

Date Night
Date Night
13 Months - RWH
Our littlest man has hit the 13 month mark. 13 months brings....walking, chatting in a language of his own, pointing, playing peek-a-boo, clapping, climbing onto the couch if there's something to stand on & give him a boost, stealing his brother's food from the plate/highchair tray, playing with cars, still playing shy/coy at times or maybe a little bit of a flirt?, loving the bath, giggling when tickled and racing up the stairs as fast as he can while squealing in delight.....our little love bug. I love this age so much and wish it would last longer. Maybe all the moments will become engrained in my memories for all of time, that would do too.

Once Upon a Time...
Part of our bed time routine with W is that as W and I lay together on his bed, I recite Goldilocks and Three Bears from memory. The version is a little different every night yet W loves it. Now after Goldilocks is finished, he tells me a story which usually is something like the following...
Once upon a time there were three firetrucks and a blue firetruck. They went into the woods. And then deep into the earth, gone forever. And never saw again. The end.

Current Events
This past week there has been a roller coaster of emotion, trepidation, and maybe a little relief. We have spent time at the Children's Hospital, the family Drs office and then the waiting game and today we were back at ACH to receive the results from
R's EEG. He has been diagnosed with Epilepsy. That's hard to hear about our baby, our perfect little man, but in a strange way there is an element of relief there as well. My thoughts had run away from me from time to time while we waited for the results, imagining the worst possible diagnosis, but to hear Epilepsy...as upsetting as this is...is so much better than other alternatives, other than perfect health of course.
So, now what? Now we learn. We immerse ourselves in information, ask questions, and take care of our Bup. He's begun a med which should eliminate all the seizures. Oh, how wonderful that will be! It's hard to witness them without panicking and their frequency has increased over the past few months. Today there were 5. As much as I hate putting meds into his little body, this is a necessity. Please let them work.
And there is more waiting. We are waiting for an MRI date. Unfortunately, as wonderful as our health care system is, all does not happen in a timely fashion. We're back at the hospital tomorrow for a follow up appointment so hopefully we will be able to receive an MRI date then.
Little R is such a trooper. He did so well at the hospital last week even though we were there for 8 hrs with little sleep and little food, he rarely complained. Until the EEG was hooked up. There's no physical pain involved in the exam just frustration at having to lay down & then have 25 electrodes glued to your head. Poor fella! I would complain too. It's always scary to put your child through tests, and maybe we're a morbid kind of family, but there was some humor too. R looked like a little space man with the EEG hooked up and his little Shrek backpack on. Poor little cutie!
So, here's the story of our R's most recent current event. Tomorrow is a new day. A day to celebrate having health and our family. Celebrate yours too.

Organizing
Controlling clutter and organizing the house seems to be an on-going battle for me. You too? It's like we finally get things under control and the way we like it and then we make a change & it's all chaotic again. Such as organizing the pantry the evening of R's bday and now it's as messed up as ever! How DOES this happen? Who makes these messes? Okay, okay...don't answer that! Also this has been underway all of 2008 with the potential & cancelled move, then the renovation, then the garage sale, then changing W's bed...whew! We are still in need of unpacking some boxes & replacing the items into the house, plus finishing organizing R's new bedroom and creating what I like to call the Multi-Purpose Room (aka...guest room/office/etc room)
So to add to the chaos because we must like things being upside down, this week we had our master closet redone and my favorite husband started digging up the front yard as we are removing most of the lawn.
Back to the closet, that's more exciting to me, our's is small with alot of wasted space so we had the Storage Works people come in, assess, and re-vamp. Even better was that it wasn't nearly as expensive as we were expecting. Wuhoo!! I can't wait to have some free time (maybe on Sunday?) to put everything away. Right now the closet is lovely & empty. Our room is not so lovely, and not so empty. R couldn't fit into his playpen due to all the clothes, even if he desperately tried to!
The other steps we have taken to clear our home of unnecessary, unused and not so loved STUFF is by hosting a successful garage sale, donating sale leftovers to the Diabetes Association (and they pick up for free!!!) and then I've been "mack-tacking" boxes that are now being used as toy organizers. W loves his "vehicle box".
This gal's blog always has lots of tips & ideas. The recent toy organizing using clear plastic drawers sounds great to me. We shall see if I endeavor that route or adapt our fancy boxes somehow.
What are your organizational and de-cluttering strategies and tips?

On the Go
R is walking!
Has been for a couple of weeks now, and he has really found his legs, so to speak. It's so cute to see him strolling along with his arms in the air for balance. He also loves crawling up the stairs, but hasn't mastered down yet. Climbing. My nemesis. It has begun. He can crawl up onto the stool in his room and loves it. Also, if there is something to step on in front of the couch he can get up there too and is a tad upset if he wants up but there's nothing to give him a little boost.
I was hoping there would be no climbing. I do not like climbing. It's dangerous and makes my life even busier. Now, with R meeting these milestones, when does the mom get the second set of eyes on the back of her head and another set of arms would be good to, thank you.

Mr. W is 34 Months
Wow! Can that be right? 34 Months. What's new with Mr. 34 Mths? Well, he continues to show us how energetic, smart, funny, exhausting and lovable he can be. Along with a stubborn streak...no comments please as to if this is genetic or not....as well as the ability to tune me out when he deems it necessary...now this is a genetic gender trait I'm certain, but will not comment any further!
W loves to ride his tricycle, play outside, tease us, laugh, run away, eat popcorn, watch Toy Story, The Big Comfy Couch, sing, recite rhymes, comment on anything he finds interesting such as people's skin color and stature (Ah! Fairly mortifying at times....recently at the grocery store where all embarrassing moments happen, we were being served by a cashier that had a lot of brown freckles around her mouth, cheekbones & eyes, to my dismay & hers, W pointed at her almost poking her in the nose we were so close, and exclaimed, "Mommy, she's dirty!" Let me just say, the cashier was not impressed!
We're almost to the countdown for turning three yrs and W loves a birthday. He wants a blue cake or a digger cake (that's if we've been to Superstore as in the bakery section there is a construction themed cake and no we can't take it home every week that we go for groceries!). Hopefully three brings more fun and better listening skills....that's my wish for three...oh good health and world peace too!

Raising Your Spirited Child
Spirited Child = More. More of everything, more personality, more, more, more.
The Spirited Child workshop hosted by Families Matter is probably one of the best parenting workshops we have attended. Today's leader is adept at adult education and so positive, encouraging and knowledgeable about children, parenting and communication in general.
Learning the nine temperaments was enlightening today and we found that six through nine are quite evident in our child, the bonus ones. Even more eye opening was analyzing our own temperament as to where the nine fit in our personality/behavior. Yikes! Apparently, I'm easily distracted....what? is that rain I hear....oh, and then...hey! did you hear that beep? dryer is done and oh!...what was I saying? Oh yeah, so, it was enlightening. I'm looking forward to next Saturday when we wrap things up and learn even more.
In case you're interested, some of the recommended reading material was"Raising Your Spirited Child" by Mary Sheedy, "Kids, Parents and Power Struggles" Mary Sheedy, "Your One year Old"- "your Ten to Fourteen Year Old" by Louise Bates Ames, "Kids are Worth It" by Barbara Coloroso, "Growing Up Again by jean Essley Clark and "Family Virtues Guide" by Linda Popov. They all look incredibly interesting and more than one will find itself in our hands although the Family Virtues Guide will be wonderful to institute into a weekly routine, especially as the boys get older. The world could use a few more virtues, and I'm certainly in need myself from time to time.
AND....we tried out a new teen age babysitter today....she did great! The boys were happy, she seemed happy and agreed to come back next Saturday...and she only lives 5 min away. WUHOO!!!!

WUHOO!!!!

Free Sippy Cup
A friend passed this info along to me. Maybe you're interested as well?
"Anyone interested in free sippy cups? Avent is giving away samples of their new Magic sippy cups. There's a 7oz one with a soft spout for infants and a 9oz one with a hard spout for toddlers. I think it's a promotion to show that they're 'health conscious' or whatever, as they're advertising them as 'BPA free'. Call the number and they will send 2 free sippy cups. The new Canadian number is 1-866-624-1906. ..call them if you are interested. One request per household."
