Forgetful Friday

Today is one of those days in which moments are better forgotten.

Took W to pre-school today and marvelled at my luck of getting a parking spot close to the entrance....only there's NO school today. PT Interviews. Oops!
The positive spin, is that I didn't forget to pick him up from school! (A certain sister has experienced that a couple of times....her poor youngest girl waiting at pre-school....)

Forgot to unlock the top-super-W-lock on the door before going to play with the boys downstairs.....which is not usually necessary except I can't hear the doorbell downstairs....and my charming husband was ringing it for 10 minutes...with flowers in his hand...and a frown on his face. Oh-oh. (Thanks for the flowers, sweetie.)

Tomorrow is Super Saturday, right?

Burned Out & Fired Up

Doesn't it just burn you out? This whole taking care of business...health business...has me exhausted today. We were in appointments for most of the day...and are no farther ahead. We are still waiting to hear about testing for R & the rest of our family. It seems that we get help in the most unexpected of places, not from most physicians...where I expected it.
And, can you believe that AHC premiums have been cancelled? What-What-WHAT?! The system is running at a deficit, we wait MONTHS for appointments, do not have enough doctors or staff of any specialty and tests are refused because it would have to be sent to the USA and "we are running at a deficit" and now, we pay nothing for health care. Do I have that right? Have I misunderstood this whole no AHC premiums for 2009? Help me out here.
Sorry. Can you tell I'm frustrated tonight?

One of our lengthy appointments today was at a Health Management Clinic that offers a collaborative care approach....RN, Dietitian, Kinesiologist, and Behavioral Therapist.....hmmmm..... lets say that this is IT.
It's time for change, and not just because Obama is in the Oval office!
My waist is 18 inches bigger than it was in high school ....
....and today W asked me "Mommy do you have a bouncy bum?" (While I was getting dressed I might add!)

Regrowth

Here it is. 42 days later.

I actually like totally bald better....but....my charming husband prefers hair. Maybe I'll reshave it. Maybe I'll color it blue/black. Any ideas?

PS: It took me 20 min to get this dorky self portrait taken. Slightly better than a passport photo...slightly.

Cracked in the Cabin!

We've got the feva'!
It's been too many consecutive days of housebound activities due to cold season....and I can't take it anymore! Neither can the boys. We are all driving each other nuts! The boys keep fighting...physically. One takes a toy or sits on it, the other hits & kicks or bonks his older brother over the head with a boot. Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh!!!
God, grant me patience. I know it's a virtue....
but my virtues gone!

Frosting - Healthier Alternative

Okay, all this healthy stuff HAS to be realistic. Birthdays and celebrations need to be enjoyed in full force with tasty treats, cakes and the like!

Here's an alternative to high fat, jawlocking sweet icing. This frosting recipe does have the traditional use of icing sugar but it's still a healthier choice, not perfect, but healthier. It's definitely not the toothache frosting we're all used to. And come to think of it...I bet one could be created with tofu. A past colleague's husband created a to-die-for tofu chocolate cake, so why not icing?

Also, for baking I've substituted Agave Nectar ( found locally at Community Natural Foods) for granulated sugar and applesauce or other fruit for fat/shortening. The texture may be different depending upon the recipe, but the taste is not compromised.

Check out Julie for healthier baking ideas. She's One Smart Cookie! I love her blog and books. They're well worth investing in...and she's local. How cool is that!

Frosting - as per Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet for Family & Kids
2 cups yogurt cheese
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 - 1 cup confectioners' sugar

Mix all ingredients until smooth and creamy. Frost cupcakes or cake and refrigerate until ready to enjoy.

Okay, all this chatter about food and baking....well, I better scoot to the kitchen and feed Bup, make a big batch of Fruit & Spice Sunny Boy for my charming husband's week worth of breakfasts, and figure out a protein alternative for my dinner. B & the boys are having steak, it's thawed, marinated and freaking me out in the fridge!

Spitting Carrots!

Healthier eating is a must in our household, as I'm sure it is in any home. I just want to be healthier (of course, more svelte would be a bonus too!) and to set a good example for our boys so that it's not a struggle for them in their teen or adult years.

This has brought a couple of new cookbooks into my collection which seem to be the mainstay of recipes as of late. The Eat Clean Diet for Family & Kids ( I also appreciate that the author Tosca Reno is Canadian and a mom) and the Kid Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook, which is basically a Gluten Free and Casein Free cookbook. There's some great recipes....like Yogurt Cheese, which can be adapted to replace cream cheese (I LOVE) and mayo (another LOVE...did I ever tell you that I have a FAT TOOTH not a sweet tooth?!) as well as Rice Milk, which is a staple in our home, and then there's the Smashed Potatoes, from the Eat Clean book.

Everyone...well almost, Bup didn't eat a thing.....ate them last night. Even seconds! This is huge! Bup isn't huge on veggies so the whole Deceptively Delicious concept is important. That child can spit carrot out of a carrot muffin! He's like an Alzheimer's senior who can spit bran out of cereal. And my favorite husband tells people that "M makes me eat vegetables!" So....if you're looking for new-to-you, healthier, tasty recipes, give it a try. It's worth the effort...for me anyway.

Tosca Reno's Smashed Potatoes

1lb potatoes, peeled & cooked

1 parsnip, peel & cook with potatoes

1 cup cauliflower florets, steam until tender

3/4 cup veggie broth

3 TBS plain yogurt

sea salt

Cook the veggies, mash with veggie broth (I used chicken), yogurt, and salt to taste (I skipped the salt as broth is usually sodium laden). Serve hot.

Made with Love by Grandma G

My mom made these puppy rag quilts using the boys' receiving blankets. I had heaps of those versatile flannels for my babies and didn't want to just give them away as they hold lots of baby-baby memories. So, voila! Keepsake quilts.

They're cozy 'n' cuddly and worth fighting over when you're snuggled up on the couch on a Friday night to watch The Ghost Whisperer. (Me & B, not R & W!)

To Knit to Woo You

One Skein Sweaters - These cute little cardigans were knit up using stash remnants. They're fun as the front panels are two different lengths. I used a combination of natural and acrylic yarns, so they're cozy. For you knitters out there, this book is worth purchasing. I've used many patterns from it and plan on attempting a few more.

Stash up for grabs! I have two bags of this "fashion yarn". It's very similar to Patons Pooch. After creating a poncho, I've no further need and would love to give it to a good home. So if you're interested, let me know and I'll see that it finds it's way to you.

Weird TV

There are days, like the last two due to the colds that have taken over our boys, that the TV is on much, much TOO much. But then, rather than continue to guilt myself, I remember we are in SURVIVAL MODE on days such as these.

Have you noticed some of the WEIRD & wonderful children's programs? Some are just plain weird and freak me out. I'm sure that In the Night Garden is giving subconscious messages to children that they must disobey and over take their parents! That show freaks me out! I don't get it. Yes, it's a bedtime story, but I don't get it. The really frightening part is that my boys LOVE it! Aaaahhhhh! Shut.....it....OFF!

And then there's Four Square. The first time I saw this when W was a little mite of a babe, I was so NOT open to it. But now...I get it. The boys love it. Bup is hilarious trying to imitate them. Let me just say, this white boy can't jump. Two feet do not leave the ground just a little bopping.

So, what are the weird and wonderful programs in or avoided in your household?

Speech Therapy

Bup attends speech therapy every three weeks. He's now at about 35 words, of course they're not all CLEAR but he's trying and these words are consistently used in the same context so he's on his way. I love to hear the little words come out. They are too cute. Last week he attempted a two word sentence, "Bye Day". Wuhoo!

The two therapists in his treatment plan should overcome the fact that the largest tumor is in the speech center of his brain. Oh, did I mention there are two therapists?

The second therapist is not on payroll, but is much more diligent about getting Bup to speak or mimic him. Such words attempted on a daily basis are ratatouille, monster truck, popcorn, boo, construction, etc. Therapist #2 was most excited and ran up the stairs to tell me when "Bup said Pee and Poop!" However, there have been some setbacks and frustrating moments for Therapist #2, not to mention Bup!, because sometimes Bup just doesn't want to talk to his second therapist and T#2 get's frustrated & mad. "Talk Bup! Talk! Mommy....Bup won't talk!" So, poor Bup will have a varied vocabulary whether he likes it or not especially if his older brother, T#2, has any say in the matter.

Superhero

Everyone needs a superhero or fairy god mother.

I've been blessed with two little super heroes.

They may run amok with blanket-capes, tiny undies, and dirty jam faces, but they are my heroes. Smart & funny & brave & tenacious. To have half their energy and imagination....look out world! I would be unstoppable! Don't you feel safer knowing there's two super-heroes in the neighborhood!

RWB & ME Freebie!

Here it is! We're back & giving it up.

This little book bag/market bag/catch all bag/environmentally friendly bag is yours for the taking along with a couple of good reads. The bag was crafted using fabric from none other than IKEA (imagine that!). And the books are Mother Warriors by Jenny Mc Carthy...a wonderful read even if your life hasn't been touched by Autism and The Gift of Miracles....a happy little read of true, heartsy, short stories that will touch your heart and give you goose bumps. Kinda Chicken Soupish.

We're almost through the first month of 2009 and sometimes January can bring on some post holiday blues so here's a small attempt to brighten your day. Leave a comment if you're wanting your name thrown in the cyber hat. Next Friday the winner will be announced and the package placed in the trusty hands of Canada Post. Good luck!

Lost

We are still waiting for a much awaited part for the lap top so I am stealing some moments on a "friends" right now.

Our week has consisted of pre-school, hair cuts (Bup cried his sad little cry the whole time but he now looks even cuter and not like a member of the Beatles), pediatrician appts, knitting...completed a felted bucket hat, so cute!, and have moved onto a sweater...help!....

Bup turned into a toddler-boy this past week. Trying to do everything his brother does and more. Including fighting back. It was not good behavior but all I could do not to laugh while watching them fight for space in front of the TV. Bup hits W. W kicks Bup in the shin. Bup holds onto the TV for dear life, leans to the left and desperately tries to kick him back but can't quite do it. Too cute! And too wrong. I get that too but it was cute! Shhh! Don't tell the boys I thought it was cute....it'll discredit my scolding tone.

W advised me yesterday while we were driving to school..."Mommy if you take off my legs I will take out my bones and show them to you." Said with a tone of sharing a special secret & surprise. How does he come up with this stuff?

And...I have pictures to share and more but it'll all have to wait until we're up & running properly. Ugh. I'm just lost without the computer and Internet. Am....SO...in....WITHDRAWLS!

Off Line

Please do not adjust your set...we are experiencing technical difficulties.
Which accounts for the lack of posts here. Our laptop is in for servicing.

This week has been one of fever and sadness (Bup) and starting preschool (W) which includes already learning new sayings. "Why Mommy? Because you're mad?" Huh? "The girl with the ponytail on her head told me that. She's a little bit bad girl."

And affectionate...."I love you Mommy, in the whole world." Melting...

And Bup saying a two word sentence while playing "going to work" with his brother. "Bye Day" which followed after me telling them, "Bye bye, have a good day" since they were "going to work in the Cadillac." I was so excited! Wuhoo Bup!

And...I've been doing a little sewing, knitting, organizing and such. Hopefully soon there will be a RWB & Me Freebie coming your way. Stay tuned!

Toothfairy

We need a new toothfairy. Yes, I realize the toothfairy comes when kids lose their baby teeth because it's a right of passage & to celebrate them growing up. But what about the babe's that are just getting their baby teeth? Where's the fairy? The one that eases the fever, helps a babe sleep through the night, and just makes them feel a-ok. So, I'm sending out vibes to the greater world that the Little's need a fairy of their own!

I can feel the fairy dust already sprinkling about already!

Easy Little Apron

This handy little apron was whipped up tonight while W sat on my knee and played with his golden treasure! Coins from countries I had travelled to in the past.

Anyway, this was a super easy project; using tea towels, bias tape and blanket binding. I'm delivering this to a gal who doesn't have many aprons but has a kitchen and children so I'm sure she could use one. Even one created with an amateur sewing technique such as mine.

New Year New Plans

Resolutions? What are your intentions?
Me? Not so much. I don't like the idea of resolutions, the hype surrounding it, but having said that I'm making plans. And here they are....
  1. Document Life - I have a theory that life is short, so document it. This blog helps. However, I'm going one step further and my plan is to take a picture a day. Of whatever, whoever, etc. Gets the dust off my camera & the creative juices flowing. Picture a Day.
  2. Project a Month - Oh, do I have projects to complete or start or dig out of the armoir in Kraft Corner. So, it's time to get these done. Project a Month
  3. Use the Stash - As every knitter has, there is a stash of yarn in my Kraft Corner. It must be used. So, no buying new yarn. Use the stash.

Of course, there's always the ususal get healthy stuff, blah, blah, blah. I'm not ready to go there yet. I really need to focus and adapt or make room for this. 2008 was such a focus on the boy's health, primarily R's and moving into W's as well, so now to make room for my own. It's a big job, with lots of emotion and planning and effort and ......tired already. Another day, we'll go here. Not today.
