Non-traditional Christmas Pics

It's that time of year again....and I'm totally behind. Normally I would have the pics developed, the cards addressed and in the mail by Nov 30. Well, here it is the 30th & I've got ideas in place, no cards purchased or made and just a mere attempt at a non-traditional albeit humorous family photo for Christmas.

Amidst the yelling, falling off the bed, falling off the stairs that lead to the bed and a bonk on the dresser we were able to get a couple of shots.

However....here's the bloopers, which are way too cute! Hope you find the humor in them as well.

Down there! Under wear?!

Tarts & Tallywackers. Not to be mistaken for Bridget Jones' Tarts and Vicars party. Although, it is a beach party this year and if it's anything like the beaches in Cuba....well...anything goes!
Blogging friend Mrs. Beck is organizing an awareness campaign and fundraiser for cancers below the waist. Such a great cause! And one that doesn't get enough "air time" as compared to other cancers. The stats are shocking. 6000 people this year will be diagnosed with a "below-the-waist" cancer such as prostate, ovarian, kidney, cervical, etc and sadly the treatment success rates aren't phenomenal either. We need more prevention, treatment, patient programs and yes, research too. Research can tend to be controversial for several reasons, yet there is a friend of my family's who is defying the odds in regards to prostate ca. He was diagnosed years ago and upon diagnosis the prognosis wasn't very positive, however he is doing phenomenally well all things considered. Of course, there are many aspects to his success but it seems that the Clinical Trials are a large part of his success. If it wasn't for research and clinical trials who knows what the outcome would have been by now. So, yay for this!
Do you know of anyone dealing with cancer or another serious illness, whether below the waist or not? Isolation and communication are often heart wrenching for patients and their families. Here's a great program which helps to keep people together. Share the bridge, Caring Bridge, with others. It's such a wonderful link.
And....support the local Tarts & Tallywackers! They're working hard to make an impact and deserve a hand...up & out!

Why Is It?

Why is it that a 3yr old can outsmart their parents?

Why is it that a 3 yr old can move their parents to tears of frustration and anger?

Why is it that a 3 yr old can conjure up thoughts of corporal punishment while listing the positive reasons to start drinking?

Why is it that a 3 yr old can make an adult realize that they are not cut out for this and have no bloody clue what they are doing?

Why is it that there is no freakin' owner's manual?

It's only Wednesday. It's only noonish.
God give me the strength to handle this business of parenting.

Boys Update...A Little Late

W - continues to make us laugh with his ideas and what he says/does. The most recent was attempting to pee on the front lawn of a friend/AVON customer. Shall we say mortified?! There I am rushing to put down Bup and catch W before he had his pants all the way down, "I want to pee in the snow!" "Nooooooo!!!"

B & I are always impressed at how bright W is. Of course we're biased. He knows his phone number and address now, thanks to his dad. And he's getting sassy...maybe thanks to me?...."You'll be in Big Trouble, Mrs!" He told me that today.

We're currently analyzing the pre-school situation and considering placing him in preschool 3 or 5 mornings per week. My head knows it would be really good for him, but my heart is sad...I feel like I'm giving him away. He's only 3! We'll see....

R - has been doing fabulously. It's like now that the seizures are under control (6 weeks yesterday since his last seizure), he can grow and develop again. He just seems to be getting taller and taller and is now 31lbs and wearing 24mths clothing size. He's also starting to pick up some words. He can say "baby" (clearly), uh-oh, a few animal sounds (moo & meow...not perfect, but they're there), Da, Ma, Norner (for W), boo, buh-bye, and is starting to sign more too such as thank you. It's coming, slowly but surely. And we finally got the call and start speech therapy next week. Yay!! Today was the Urology follow up appt and it went really well. All is as it should be in regards to his testicles, so hopefully we'll not need our Dr. C again. We're just so happy to see these positive changes. Go Bup go!

Razing Awareness

As you all know, our precious son R aka Bup has Tuberous Sclerosis and Epilepsy, seizures, as a result of the Tuberous Sclerosis tumors throughout his brain. There is such a stigma still in regards to seizures. They're scary. Misunderstood to many. Mental Illness...unable to function, carry out a normal life...these are some of the interpretations when people hear seizures. So, it's imperative that people become educated about seizures and how they affect those living with them, their families, etc. In one small way to help with this education, I have joined the Epilepsy Calgary's upcoming awareness campaign. So please here is my plea for sponsorship. A dollar or more, whatever you can spare, please sign up as I endeavor to meet my goal of raising $3000 for Epilepsy Calgary, by having my head shaved. Just a little effort on my part in which to try and walk in the footsteps of those who have undergone nuero surgery due to seizures and consequently had their head shaved as well. Razing awareness.

Check out all the info about the Bare naked Noggins Event! It's bound to be a fun day. Chilly but fun! If you're in town, come on down on Dec. 15. Witness the festivities and learn more about Epilepsy.

Bedtime has been a struggle more often than not lately. Tonight was no exception.
Five times W was up for one thing or another. Twice for legitimate toileting so that was okay...a little frustrating, but ok. Then I noticed his bedroom light shining under the door and what did I find? But a little boy sitting by the headboard reading his new Munschworks Book. So, I played the Robot routine...said nothing, did not look him in the eye, calmly tucked him back in and the second time, the book came out with me with loud protests of, "Hey! Hey!".
Next my favorite husband saw the shining light and entered the room to find our avid reader engrossed in a Christmas book. B talked to W about going to sleep and
W told him, "I'm calling the police."
B: "What did you say?"
W: "I'm calling the police cause SHE TOOK MY BOOK!"

Can you believe it? I hardly can! Who knew he KNEW about calling the authorities?! Isn't this all starting rather early?! If anyone teaches him how to dial the phone they are in BIG TROUBLE!!

Just When...

Just when we thought we had the all-clear....
Poor Babe, tonight several hours after he had been asleep there was loud crying and as I entered his room the aroma hit me. Oh, it's sad to have a sick baby. It's even sadder for him to be showered in the middle of the night....and for my favorite husband as I dragged him out of bed and into the shower too! Troopers! But they're both all clean and back to bed.
We were all back to sleep and all clear when....
the older babe arrived in our bed, with an upset tummy and threats to "spill". So, it's 5am, we've been up for 2hrs, my favorite husband is sleeping in W's bed otherwise he would have a sleepless night, and W and I are watching the Polar Express. It's been our savior over these days of spills.
Here's hoping this bug will "bug-off" and that there is a lot of sleep in our near future!

Avoidance

It's 10:31pm.
All the boys are in bed.
All three!
They are NOT ALL ASLEEP!
Three books, three stories, three songs, a snuggle and.....Guess who's up?
And throwing me kisses...
bringing me a found crayon .....
....and a pair of socks (don't ask...cause I don't know why...)
.... does not make it okay to be up until all hours, Mr. Spiller!

Okay.....off I go or he'll be recovering all sorts of found loot from his room whether I'm up or not.

* did I mention that I'm getting grouchy? Getting angry get's me nowhere.
"It's just an asscident Mommy. Don't use your angry voice. Be happy Mommy."*

The Spills

Still spilling here.
Bup was only affected for one night. Thankfully.
W tricked us by having an awesome day yesterday by being his regular self, but then as evening came on all that changed.
Buy shares in laundry detergent, and the Rug Doctor. They're bound to go up after this weekend!

Spilling

This afternoon we have spent our time on the couch and scrubbing carpets, clothes, etc. Our little man W has the stomach flu. He "spills". (W's description of vomiting).
Poor fella!
W is so sweet when he's sick. Quiet and has the MOST polite manners ever. "No thank you Mommy. I just said no thank you." 7-Up was offered....and declined! You know it's bad when! Poor little man.
As much as I am enjoying the quiet time of snuggling on the couch.....this is not the ideal way in which to achieve some cuddle time.....we could have passed on this one.
My heart goes out to W every time he spills as it's quite scary to little people and yet he's a brave little fella.
Here's hoping W doesn't share this Spill Bug and that he is well again soon.

Cardiology Update

First, many thanks to all of you for the prayers and positive thoughts while Bup was having his cardiology work-up yesterday. And guess what? They worked!

The news we received was almost the best we could have hoped for. Our little man has two tiny, tiny benign tumors, rhabdomyomas, on the lower wall of his heart between the two chambers. Really tiny! 2mm each. These are not interfering with his heart's function at all. His heart is perfectly formed (other than these abnormal growths, which is what a tumor is) and is functioning just fine other than a faint murmur which we knew he had. Despite all of this, he was still sent home wearing a heart monitor to further asses for abnormalities. The little trooper! He did not once tug at the wires or fuss with them at all! Of course, undergoing the ultrasound and EKG was a different response. There were lots of tears and struggling to get off the bed combined with a few giggles. Baby Einstein DVDs are a wonderful thing! As is listening to your own heartbeat. Every time the tech would play the sound of his heart out loud, R would stop crying long enough to let a little giggle out. It was too cute.

Oh! And the EKG tech, told B & I that Bup is the "most enormous baby ever! He looks at least 2yrs old. Was he a big baby at birth?" B laughed when I said no (8lbs13oz is small to me).

Yes, it still tugs at my heart that our baby has more tumors albeit small, benign and harmless. It's just wrong and scary. Aren't these feelings normal? I would think for any parent.

However, all in all, we're extremely relieved with the results and ever so grateful. Wuhoo!!:)

Storytime

Both boys have developed our love of reading, which is wonderful!

Recently, when Bup is desperately wanting a book read and I'm in the middle of something I have asked W to "read" to Bup and then seated them together for storytime. It's super cute to listen to & watch. You never know what W is going to "read" regardless of what book is in his hands. He was reading/singing Down by the Bay to a Wheels on the Bus book just the other day.

R loves, loves, LOVES Naano aka Elmo, so it's a quick time out for me to have them together on the couch with an Elmo book.

Cardiology

Tomorrow is the Babe's Cardiology appt.

It's a little scary to have more testing done because everytime an organ has been checked in the past tumors are found. This track record makes our hearts not want to have any further testing! Of course, our minds take over and we move forward.

However, I am determined and visualizing that tomorrow's appointment will be different! The Cardiologist will tell us that he has a faint murmur (we already know this), the ECG and EKG are normal and there are no tumors! That's the news R will receive tomorrow.

So, thank you in advance for sending our Bup your positive vibes, your prayers, visualize with us that R will only receive good news at the Cardiology appt.

This is Pete Wiggins, as seem on Ellen.
I dare you to attempt watching this without laughing out loud! This is one of the most precocious 5yr old boys and I just love him!

ADLD

You all have heard about ADD and ADHD, well I am lucky enough not have either, but I do have ADLD. Attention Deficit Lazy Disorder.
Why is it that everything I start does not get finished in a timely manner?
Why does it take me three days to take off the tags and put away a pile of face cloths, dish cloths, tea towels and oven mitts?
Why are there two loads of laundry waiting to be folded in Man's World?
Why are there two baskets of folded laundry in my room STILL waiting to be put away?
And why can't I bloody well find anything I'm looking for?!

A.D.L.D. That's me.

This Past Week

Where have I been? Home.
What have I been doing? Not much.
How are the boys? Good.
Feel like you're trying to pull teeth from a chicken? Yup.

Monday - much needed home day. De-Halloweening the house & yard. By the way, what shall I do with the mushed pumpkin on the chair in the front garden? Yuckers!
Tuesday - yet another child appointment and a shopping trip for some bouncy toys. Right next door to our favorite toy store is a well known yarn shop. It is also well known among knitters that children are NOT welcome. Guess what rebel took both her boys there? It went really, really well other than hugging the mannequins which are swinging from stands, kind of noose-like really....disturbing.... and using the bathroom without parental guidance (good job W!)...thankfully I caught him before he came searching for me with his pants in his hand. Imagine the very stoic, unsmiling woman who searched me out to inform me that "He's in the bathroom." Hear a firm British accent here. And "No hugging the mannequins." Oh, I am SUCH a rebel!
Wednesday - Heritage Time Out mom's group....and Take Your Kid to Work day for all Grade 9 students in the city. My niece could not attend with her parents due to confidentiality so she "worked" with me on Wednesday and I had three extra little boys that day which included school transporting. I created a monster though, a knitting one. Taught said niece to knit at the Mom's Group and she knit all day!! It really is the new yoga.
Thursday- Cheap Chicks Coffee morning - three of us who are desperately trying to be more frugal (and sometimes successful at it) meet regularly, this time at our home where we coffeed on homemade Mexican Coffee, exchanged Crockpot recipes (hello! easy is my middle name!), dined on fruit crisp while the Littles ate us out of the house...ham sandwiches, popcorn, fruit crisp, cereal, mandarin oranges, etc...and there was even a moment when all 6 kids 4yrs & under were QUIET....no they were SILENT!, of course they were eating popcorn and watching a movie, but hey! You do what you gotta do!
That evening it was a friend's home party extravaganza night where Christmas presents were purchased and much smelling of yummy and weird scents took place.
Friday - TGIF. Truly. Started at 420am. Why is the babe not sleeping in?! Playschool...swimming. Went really well. No child of mine bolted from me in the complex. There was one splashing incident which was quickly curtailed.
Chinese Take Out for dinner. Wuhoo!!
And there you have it....a week in the life of a stereotypical SAHM. All glamour. To quote my friend's husband, "Every day is a Saturday!"

Politics

Okay, I'm not all that much of an political scientist, but here are a few thoughts on current politics.
Canada....frankly I'm happy the way the election went. And so pleased that Dion is gone! That guy and his agenda just....ugh, gives me hives. Recently I was at a concert where at the encore the musician commented about how important it is to be patriotic. Something that is kind of foreign to Canadians I think. We're QUIETLY patriotic, unlike our southern friends.
US...well, well, well, it's FINALLY about to end. Yes. The two yr campaign is frankly an in sult to the people and such a waste of money & energy. The amount of money that is spent on slander and mud-slinging and trying to sway "our" (I use the term our lightly as I'm not American nor able to vote in the US) opinion is an absolute sin. The millions of dollars should be sent on saving those in their backyard. Think of all the school programs and health care programs that could be enhanced by all those dollars. It is rumored that Mrs. Palin (yes, Mrs) has spent at least $170, 000 on her wardrobe. Really?! That's more than most people's yearly salaries. Now, Politician Palin, there's a soapbox I should probably avoid. I just don't agree with all the hype around her. I must be really old fashioned because I just am stuck on the fact that she has a family that needs her at home. And a new special needs baby that should not be on a campaign trail. It shocks me that this is okay. My favorite brother in law and I spoke about her and he really surprised me, in a good way, as to his thoughts on her showing empowerment of women, etc. I guess, maybe, but I'm not buying it.
Matt Damon's opinion on Sarah Palin in power just summed it up even more for me.
So, if I was an American citizen I would be voting for Obama.
