Montessori At Home

Ah, education. It's all encompassing and all confusing. For me anyway. Pre school or not? Kindergarten or not? Public or private? What kind of each? Fees vs mac & cheese for dinner forever?! It's all an educated guessing game, really and I think people just need to do what is best for them and their child. Although, isn't this the adage of parenting in a nut shell?

ANYWAY....We enrolled W in a Montessori preschool which started at the beginning of January. He LOVES it! In some ways it is such a fit for him....very hands on, working with real life items, self directed yet very structured in regards to how, routine and learning to do things by himself. This is the child who would rather play with his dad's tools or my cooking tools than his toys....so Montessori makes sense.

We've adapted some things into our home, like spooning and pouring. I even found some small glass bowls and cream & sugar sets for him to use at home. He loves it and asks to "do spooning".

By the way, pants aren't a pre-requisite at home...school yes.

Of course, little brother wants to do whatever big brother is doing, so Bup tries his hand at spooning too. He enjoys it...tastes it...and makes a bit of a mess...but that's ok....it's not like the floor was clean to begin with!

Today Favorite Husband surprised W by picking him up from school, meeting the teacher and seeing what kind of work W is doing at school. W was SO pleased! How sweet to witness the surprise and delight of a child over something so simple, really. It's heart warming.

  1. W sounds so proud of his work! And it seems like a great fit.
It feels like such a trick to figure it all out, but so gratifying when it all comes together.
Thanks for sharing your Montessori info.

  2. I think boys respond to dads going to school with so much enthusiasm. I was told that kids actually get better marks if the dad goes along with mom to parent teacher interviews.
