Green Mothers

Recycling is the bain of my existance.

I agree with it.

I want to.

But I HATE it....because it's not easy, I don't have the room, I hate the stockpile, it's easier to just chuck it, our curb side service sucked, and the new service doesn't start until May. Oh May hurry up!

While perusing Chatelaine today, I came upon this article and it cracked me up. Cracked I say!! Grab a bevy, have a comfy seat and read away. May it give you a Saturday Smile too!

World Epilepsy Day

The boys and I had a super time at our City Hall adventure for World Epilepsy Day - Purple Day. Riding the train was a hit for the boys as well as the bags of mini Oreos.

Which is a partial reason as to why Bup's little chocolate face was an attraction while waiting for the festivities to commence. Unfortunately I brought the wrong camera...one with a dead battery so there are no pics.
The mom who spoke was very heartfelt and moving as was the 12 yr old girl who lives with Epilepsy and is an avid volunteer at EAC. What a girl! She's amazing!

May today and the precedent that is set brings Epilepsy out of the dark and comfort to those who are affected.
Here's the little man we wear purple for.
Wear your purple proudly.
Heartfelt thanks to those of you who do!
Hugs,
Bup & the rest of us

Epilepsy Global Awareness - Purple Day

Tomorrow is Purple Day to increase awareness about Epilepsy.

So break out your purple clothes and spread the word. Epilepsy exists, people need help and those with Epilepsy are normal & wonderful & need to be heard.

If you are in town, come on down to City Hall where the mayor will be speaking as well as a young girl afflicted by Epilepsy and free purple cupcakes for all.

Then scoot on down 7th ave to Banker's Hall where EAC volunteers will be handing out information, pins and cookies with purple icing.

If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of me and my boys! I'll be the mom with the sparkly purple nails and two little boys covered in purple icing. See you there!

Blog Station

Where do you blog?
With your laptop on your knees on the couch?
In bed?
The office?

Here's one of my spots. This oak roll top desk was my dad's. It has a history...and if memory serves me right I think my dad won it in a game of poker when he was a young adult. I like it. The mess can be tucked away with a roll of the top. ( A roll top house is on order!)

Coffee - The Better Parent Beverage

Coffee is not really my drink of choice. Diet Coke is....again...after giving it up for 3 yrs! 3 yrs and I'm on the coke again...wacko. Anyway....
After a conversation with friends and remembering how my almost 2yr old W would do anything to drink flavored coffee creamer right out of the bottle, I set out to make my own. Must be healthier and less expensive than store bought, right?

This recipe is pretty good!

And hey...the Aerolatte frother is awesome & just makes beverage making so much more fun & fancy.

Homemade Coffee Creamer
2/3 cup powdered milk
2 cups water
2 packets of sweetener
2 Tbsp Vanilla (and I actually used Vanilla...not rum which is my usual substitute! )
Mix. Add to coffee. Enjoy.

Recently, my cousin, single mother of four, was shocked that I don't generally drink coffee to which she responded with,
"Oh, M! You really should drink coffee. It makes you a better parent!

This from the lady who cannot be out of range of Starbucks for a machiatto. (sp?)

Urban Camping

W was treated to a special date night with Uncle B. Urban Camping in Uncle B's basement!

What special memories Uncle B is creating with his nephew. W is so lucky...we all are so lucky.
A great night was had by all with much giggling, asleep by 11:00pm then up & off to McD's for breakfast and the play area by 730am!

Somehow, though, I think there was another camping skill taught that night. Secretly so.

Last night after tucking our Wonder Boy into bed and while singing Bup his lullabies, I heard W's little footsteps. When I came out of Bup's room, what did I see? A little pyjama-ed boy, standing on the deck in his Bob the Builder boots with a sheepish grin on his face. I was a little miffed as he was to be in bed and a little startled as I didn't think he would go out the patio doors, yes I had double checked that the front door was double locked. Oh, and one more thing....here's the Urban Camping Skill....a long line of yellow snow on the deck.
As my brother would say, "Don't eat yellow snow."
Not even at our dog-free house.

Baby Bup 22 Months

Have you known mothers who treat their youngest child as if they are still the baby yet the child is now most definitely not?
I understand that now.
I could be that weird mother when it comes to Bup.
While snuggling him he's my baby, but then I catch a proper glimpse when he's playing or climbing onto the back of the couch and it hits that he's a full on toddler, big little boy, wearing size 2T or 3 and exerting his opinion and independence daily.

This little boy, our baby Bup:
  • is sunny & sometimes cautious/shy
  • likes to be rolled in a blanket & then walks around like an egg roll.

  • sings
  • is ADDICTED to Elmo.
  • kicks his feet and gets super excited when you have a book to read
  • has tantrums when he feels the need arises
  • is a little instigator...steals toys from his brother and then runs away as fast as he can.
  • climbs furniture and tries to jump. Jumps are still cute, slightly uncoordinated with feet often staying on the floor.
  • Jumps off the edge of the pool.
  • loves "oneys" aka money. Will carry it around or hide it in the couch.
  • enjoys cooking.

  • gives the best kissesBulleted List

  • is still seizure free!
  • has a growing vocabulary and sometimes it's even clear! Speech Therapy is working!
  • signs without prompting words like Hot! and hurt
  • is the light of our day!

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

There are some late afternoons when the last thing I want to do is prepare dinner. There. It's there for the world to see. There goes my performance review! But hey....
...it's the Witching Hour after all. The three of us aren't at our best. Hungry, tired, wound up, some of us want quiet time, coconut rum & a cigar, others want Elmo, and the list goes on.
At 4pm it was one of those moments, and then a sprightly little angel knocked on our door! No, it wasn't Delivery vs. Delissio...it was a niece, stopping by to play with the boys & help me. Her Christmas gift to me is a once a week after school visit. Now, THAT is the gift that keeps on giving!
Dinner still needed to be prepared. The cupboard needs to be bare. Leftovers be gone!
Cooked lasagna noodles.
80% of a rare blade steak. Do y'all know how much I detest steak?! Gack!
Doesn't look promising.
But the trusty blender is my friend. Pureed the steak with canned tomatoes, tomato paste, Epicure pizza spice, mixed plain yogurt with Parmesan cheese, layered it all, bake it and voila Leftover Lasagna.
It was a hit!

The Ultimate Mothering Tool

At the risk of being either Psycho-Evil Mom or Drill Sergeant Mom, this shiny whistle is now part of my Mother Uniform and integral tool for this trade of motherhood.
I expressed my concern that I am scarring my kids for life by using a whistle, but the Parent Educator who meets with us weekly assured me it may be okay i fused properly and is widely used in some schools.
Which reminds me of a certain substitute teacher from my elementary school days (that I despised) who insulted us grade 3ers by comparing us to Trudeau and she wore a whistle too!
Scar, scar...therapy, therapy...

BUT, the whistle is a wonderful tool. My boys HATE it. I've only blown it twice this week. Now I just need to wear it and they are ready to comply.
No, they're not prefect little lemmings but at least they pay a little bit of attention to my demands...requests.

So, what's the verdict....Mommy Dearest or Captain Von Trapp?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The cutest little Leprechauns are found here. They play pranks, hide things such as money, and definitely have lucky charms. That's what gets them through toddler hood...their lucky charms!

In the back burner of their heritage there is a smidgen of Irish genes, which explains their musical talents, ability to tell good stories, love for potatoes and "the drink"....milk & juice of course!

Enjoy your St. Patty's day.
May it be filled with happiness and all things green.

Hello J.A.G.

Well, time passes and heals all things.
Heals? Not really.
Changes? Yes.

Today is the 18th yr anniversary of when you, J.A. left us, left this earth and went somewhere good...I hope...no, not hope... trust.

You were much too young at 25yrs to take that journey. It was so wrong at the time and especially the way in which it took place will forever be wrong. However, if there is any good from that tragic night it is that we are all safe; our family and other families... safe and really, this is due to your sacrifice.

Oh, but I was angry at times. Angry at you, the situation, the individual who made this happen and of course, the unfairness of it all. This anger has dissipated...for the most part...and only time could have that effect.

Much has happened in the 18 yrs since we last saw one another. Some of which is better left unsaid...growing pains! Yet, there are other events that I wish & hope you have witnessed in some way, shape or form. Such as all the nieces & nephews that would have enjoyed knowing you, including my own two little sons. But maybe you do "know" them? Maybe you see them? Maybe you protect them and in some way teach them to be creators, builders like you & your carpentry skills? If there are guardian angels, may you be an angel to my boys.

Today has been a mixed bag of emotion for me. As the day progresses into evening I find myself a little blue, a little edgy, and realize it is because I am thinking of you, what was, what happened and what might have been. So, in order to ease the edginess, I am writing to you to release a feeling or two and put it out there to the Universe that today, I thought of you. In good ways too. Your wacky sense of humor, charm, cocky confidence, your silent protectiveness of a little sister mixed with the probability of a willingness to trade that little sister for a case of beer!:) And many more thoughts.

You are remembered.

Always,
MLG-H

"No News"

Today at breakfast, just upon finishing, Bup was requesting "Elmos". Meaning he wants to watch an Elmo DVD.
The child is an Elmo addict! It's the first thing he asks for in the morning after "mik or jooos". And he has been known to have complete, melt-down tantrums if Elmo is not available. Which is quite shocking for our even tempered little man.
So, this morning, Daddio comments that he wants to watch The News, to which our little man who usually talks in his own Bup language clearly states,
"No News."

It was adorable and funny and perfect timing and melted our hearts.

Boring Purses Unite! 10 Things in (one of) My Purse.

If the eyes are the window to a soul...what's a purse say?!
Here's 10 things from the purse I carry the most. They get switched daily, sometimes several times a day depending upon what's on the agenda for that day. So, here it goes:
1. Stagewest rescheduling letter. They're renovating you know!
2. Pinecone. R picked it up & carried it on a walk, now it's in my purse.
3. Kleenex.
4. Soak. " A scent for celebration" Just in case I need to soak a handknit on the go? Bought at Make One and forgotten about.
5. MAC Plum Dandy lipstick.
6. Several receipts.
7. Ladies only acoutrements. Have to keep these hidden as both boys pretend that they are lipstick and use them openly!
8. Mini Tonka red, white & blue striped race car.
9. Kit Kat Singles wrapper. Oops! Must have been hungry while grocery shopping.
10. I-Cord for W's Christmas sweater from Grandma G.

So, unexciting. So motherly! Ack.
My blogger pal Mrs. Beck gave me the idea to get this post rolling. So, in the spirit of good fun and a little healthy voyerism of sorts, I tag Mrs. Mittens, Mrs. Wonderland, and Mrs. Sweet Peas.

Audiology Appointment

Tuesday was Bup's day at the Children's Hospital for a hearing exam. Which was requested by the Speech Path as sometimes people's hearing isn't quite fine tuned enough for speech to develop properly.

It always amazes me how technology/science can test all these systems on little people. It was so fun to watch R respond in the sound booth. After each sound and box with the stuffed animal would light up, Bup started saying hi to the stuffies. It was pretty cute!

Then we moved into a second testing room where he sat on my knee, watching Nemo while the tech inserted a ear "plug" into his ear that emits a sound to which his eardrum responds by emitting a sound in response & these waves are captured & measured on a computer graph. Amazing!!

Of course, Bup did not like any "camera" being placed in his ears. There was a little crying and struggling yet he did SUPER!

And the results? His left ear's hearing is perfect! His right ear? Did not pass the tests. This may be due to him having a little cold and fluid build up from it or maybe something else. So, we're going to wait for the cold to pass and retest again in May.

"Can I Have a Popcorn Storytime?"

Story time before bedtime. Tonight's titles were Old MacDonald had a Woodshop, National Geographic Kids Sharks, The Little Engine that Could and Usborne Books Picture Atlas...cause W was telling me about the Continents and Africa today after pre-school. I kid you not. Anyway..

Sometimes we make it special by having popcorn, such as tonight.
R cracked me up! He was so laid back...reclining onto the arm of the sofa, while eating his popcorn.

W couldn't get his hands any fuller.

Don't ya love Bup's popcorn bowl?! This coveted bowl is a favorite wedding shower gift from a kindred spirit. If you ever notice a "Knob Sister" in the comment section....she's the creator of our favorite popcorn bowl.

Mealtime Madness

Due to our young family's schedule we rarely eat dinner together on a week night. Favorite B gets home close to the boys' bedtime so the boys and I eat early; about 430pm.
As I was dishing out the Littles' meals tonight, it struck me that this was the most colorless meal ever!

Nutritionally defunct?
A colon's nightmare?

Wholewheat pasta bows with pesto sauce, microwave scrambled eggs, and sliced cucumbers. The boys ate it up! Not a crumb to spare. Blue vinyl tablecover by RCSS and stylish plastic plates by IKEA.
Thankfully, my favorite husband was lucky enough to dine on Maple glazed spareribs, brown rice and steamed cauliflower & broccoli. Blessed provider that he is!
Hey...speaking of the OVEN...our lovely less than a year old double oven...while it was preheating tonight I smelled the acrid scent of melting plastic. Huh? Open the door and I found this!
W!! "Did you put something in the oven?"
"A blanket?"
"No..."
"Oh! Yes, I put the thing from the fridge."

The THING is the LOCK! Obviously, it frustrates W as he wanted it baked, but it doesn't deter him.
Do-not-by-these-locks.

What's your family's favorite wacky, meal?

Mealtime Madness

Due to our young family's schedule we rarely eat dinner together on a week night. Favorite B gets home close to the boys' bedtime so the boys and I eat early; about 430pm.
As I was dishing out the Littles' meals tonight, it struck me that this was the most colorless meal ever!

A colon's nightmare?

Wholewheat pasta bows with pesto sauce, microwave scrambled eggs, and sliced cucumbers. The boys ate it up! Not a crumb to spare. Blue vinyl tablecover by RCSS and stylish plastic plates by IKEA.
